Key Takeaways:

  • Interior Maharashtra sees widespread 40–44°C temperatures
  • Akola records the highest temperature in India for 3 consecutive days
  • Anticyclone driving intense heat across the region
  • Thunderstorms are likely between April 19 and 22, bringing relief

All three landlocked sub-divisions of Maharashtra have been catching up with the seasonal heat. Vidarbha is a shade higher than the other two, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra. Most parts of the state, outside the Konkan Coast, have exceeded 40°C, and many places have recorded temperatures above 42°C. Akola has the distinction of recording the highest temperature in the country for the last three consecutive days. Yesterday, the city registered the highest temperature of this season at 44°C.

High temperatures are likely to continue for the interiors of Maharashtra for the next 3–4 days. There is an anticyclone between 10,000 and 20,000 feet in the upper air pattern over Maharashtra and Karnataka. Under its influence, the air parcel is sinking over these parts, and the downward motion is raising the low-level temperatures. This feature is likely to continue till 18th April and get displaced thereafter.

Starting on the weekend, on 18th & 19th April, multiple factors will act in tandem to displace the anticyclone. A cyclonic circulation is likely to come up over Southeast Pakistan and the adjoining Gujarat region on 18th–19th April. This will change the wind pattern over the western parts of Maharashtra. The seasonal wind discontinuity/trough will become active and run from Vidarbha to the interiors of Tamil Nadu and Kerala between 19th and 22nd April. East–west oscillation of this trough will shift the weather activity along the coastline from Konkan to Kerala, across Goa and Coastal Karnataka.

The accumulated heat and presence of these features will trigger thunderstorm activity over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra between 19th and 22nd April 2026. The weather activity may not be simultaneous over these parts and could get staggered. Rain and thundershowers accompanied by strong winds are likely over the state during this period. The remnant effect may even continue in some parts on 23rd and 24th as well. The extreme heat conditions will abate from these parts and provide temporary relief.
