The weather in Maharashtra has remained warm and dry throughout March, with the state recording an 81% rainfall deficit between March 1 and 31. However, April is set to bring the first pre-monsoon showers, offering much-needed relief from the scorching heat.

A cyclonic circulation is currently active over Marathwada and adjoining regions, while a trough extends from South Chhattisgarh to Madhya Maharashtra, passing through Vidarbha. These weather systems are expected to trigger light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning strikes across Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada between April 1 and 3. Isolated hailstorms may also occur in some areas.

Rainfall activity will gradually increase over Madhya Maharashtra, South Konkan, and Goa during this period. On April 3, isolated heavy spells are likely in South Konkan, Goa, and South Madhya Maharashtra. Cities such as Hingoli, Latur, Jalna, Nanded, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur may experience intense rainfall.

The rain is expected to subside from April 5 onward, bringing clearer skies. These showers will significantly reduce the ongoing heatwave conditions, providing relief to residents across Maharashtra.

Mixed Impact on Agriculture

The pre-monsoon rains will have a dual effect on the state’s agriculture sector:

• Negative Impact: Farmers engaged in harvesting Rabi crops may face disruptions due to sudden rainfall.

• Positive Impact: The increased soil moisture will benefit upcoming Kharif crops, improving groundwater levels and preparing the land for sowing.

Maharashtra is set to welcome its first pre-monsoon showers, marking a shift from the dry March weather. While the rains may pose challenges for ongoing harvesting, they will also replenish soil moisture, aiding future agricultural activities.
