Mumbai Likely To Have First Pre-Monsoon Shower This Week
May 5, 2025, 3:40 PM | Skymet Weather TeamMumbai has not received any rainfall during this year so far. As such, after the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, the coastal city goes silent on the weather. Occasionally, some stray storm in the Arabian Sea comes closer to the Konkan Coast in the post-monsoon to lash some showers. Otherwise, the city patiently waits for the arrival of the monsoon. A precursor to that is the pre-monsoon showers, ‘off and on,’ and more often, it happens after 15th May. This season may become an outlier to witness pre-monsoon activity rather early in May.
The entire northern plains have observed a decent spread of pre-monsoon thundershowers over the last couple of days. Parts of Rajasthan had a bigger share than the others. Now, a cyclonic circulation is likely to shift over central and south Rajasthan and the adjoining north Gujarat region. A strong and streamlined flow of southwesterly winds will sweep the coast of South Gujarat and Konkan and penetrate deep inland as well. Also, there is an anticyclone in the lower levels over the Central Arabian Sea, closer to the west coast of Goa and North Coastal Karnataka. This feature is streaming moist northerly winds over Konkan and Goa in the lower levels. Under the combined influence of these two features, Mumbai is likely to have pre-monsoon rain and showers a little earlier than normal.
Surface and low-level winds have predominantly changed over to the southwesterly for the Konkan region. The land interaction is minimal, and therefore the day temperatures have remained checked between 33° and 34°C at the Santacruz observatory. The minimum temperature is also likely to remain between 24° and 26°C during this week. Scattered clouds are likely to appear on 06th and 07thMay with an outside chance of having stray showers. The expanse of clouds and scale of rain and thunderstorm could increase between 08th and 11th May. The wet spell is unlikely to cause any disruption in the normal activities of rail, road, and air operations.
