Mumbai lies in the Konkan division of Maharashtra being one of the rainiest pockets. In fact, all the parts of the Konkan division take turns to see extreme weather events during the Monsoon season. Monsoon rains in general are peculiar, having a skewed distribution wherein even a distance of 10 km can have a difference of a lot of rainfall over the region.

This season, Mumbai rains have broken several records with July almost reaching the record rainfall mark and September easily surpassing the monthly mean in just four days of the month.

This time, Mumbai has seen large number of three digit events wherein an episode of over 200 mm was seen in June, July saw one episode of rains over 300 mm, one of over 200 mm, and the third of over 100 mm. August saw just one episode of 3 digit rains but September saw three episodes of three digit rains.

In fact, against 341 mm, Mumbai has already recorded 569 mm of rainfall during the first five days of the month itself and it looks like, it may easily reach double the amount of rains as the entire month is left. Usually also, 95 percent of Mumbai rains are observed in Monsoon itself while right from November to April, weather almost remains dry.

This year, Mumbai has already made several records right surpassing its annual rains before September, in fact, the city nearly missed the all time July rains record. In a nutshell, Mumbai rains have had a bumper Monsoon this year.
