Rainiest September for Ahmedabad in a decade, more rains likely

During the span of 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Thursday Ahmedabad has received 52 mm of rain. This is the second heaviest spell of rain in Ahmedabad after 56 mm recorded on September 5. The city on September 6 as well had received 46 mm of heavy rain.

Usually, the city doesn’t receive such heavy precipitation at this time of the year. The monthly average rainfall for Ahmedabad for the month of September is a meagre 56.8 mm. But the city until now has received 253 mm of rain breaking the ten-year-old record of 248.5 mm observed in 2012.

The all-time record for September rainfall for the city of Ahmedabad is 636.5 mm recorded in the year 1950.

A Low Pressure Area has developed over Southeast Arabian Sea off South Gujarat coast. Therefore, we expect moderate to heavy rains to continue over Ahmedabad and adjoining parts of Gujarat region until tomorrow i.e. September 28. Thereafter rains will decrease but on and off light rains will continue until the first week of September.

Yesterday, heavy rains have already led to flooding in many parts of the city. Localized flooding, waterlogging and traffic jams will be a sight until tomorrow. Relief from rains will be seen in Ahmedabad September 29 onward.

Gujarat as a whole has received some extremely good rains this monsoon season. According to the data available with Skymet from June 1 to September 26 is excess by a good margin of 32%.
