South India was the first to start with severe heatwave conditions, early in April. Rayalaseema was the hottest pocket. Anantapur, Kurnool, Cuddappah, Nandyal and Tirupati perpetually remained in the mid-40s for weeks together. Activation of pre-monsoon trough has provided relief and the temperatures dropped to 40°C or less in most parts of South India.
The semi-permanent feature of south India will remain active and enhance the pre-monsoon activity. The north-south oriented trough/ wind discontinuity extends from parts of Madhya Pradesh to down south, up to the Comorin area, cutting across Marathwada, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Also, there is an offshore cyclonic circulation in the lower levels over the Arabian Sea, fueling moisture along the coast. Under the influence of these systems, South India will have a rainy spell this week, abating the heat over the region. The western half of South India will have strong activity, while the eastern side may have to contend with scattered and moderate rainfall.
Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Kerala and the interiors of Tamil Nadu bordering Kerala will have fierce weather activity in a few days. Heavy rains and thundershowers are likely over Kerala and Karnataka on 13th, 16th and 17th May. Intense thunderstorm activity may continue at some other places, as well, during other days. The state of Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema will have moderate weather activity on regular basis. Major cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, and Chennai will have moderate to heavy showers.
Rainfall amount for the week may be around 25-30mm for Chennai and Puducherry, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandaya, Coimbatore, and Madurai are likely to have 60-80mm rainfall. Coastal Karnataka and Kerala will have heavy downpours in a few days, with the potential of three-digit rainfall in 24 hours. Kerala has to watch out for inclement weather conditions, both during the day and night, during this week.
