Delhi/NCR witnessed another spell of rain and thundershowers yesterday. Sharp showers, albeit for small duration, were observed at many places. Intermittent rain continued throughout the day, with breaks in between, at most places. Base station Safdarjung recorded 4mm rainfall and Palam observatory measured 15mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, ending 8.30 A.M today. Cloudy conditions prevail but rains are unlikely now.
There has been large variation in the temperatures. The day temperature dipped to 16.9°C yesterday from its previous day high of 23.2°C. The minimum temperature has risen to 12.6°C from its previous day mark of 8°C. The fluctuations in other parameters have also been large over last few weeks. The trend will continue and the minimum temperature will dip substantially tomorrow, as well.
Base observatory, Safdarjung has recorded 21mm rainfall and airport Palam measured a total of 36mm in this month, so far. The monthly average is 19.2mm for Safdarjung and 17.2mm for Palam. These amounts are the highest in the last four years. In 2022, these two observatories had recorded monthly rainfall of 88.2mm and 110mm respectively. The Republic Day 2026 was the coldest since 2021, and the minimum temperature had plunged to 4.2°C. In 2021, the minimum was registered at 2.1°C on the Republic Day. Palam had the lowest minimum temperature of 2.3°C on 15thJan 2026, which is the lowest in the last two decades or so. Safdarjung has a record of plummeting to 1.4°C on 16thJan 2023.
The cloud cover is expected to lift later part of the day, but comes up again tomorrow and day after. Though, no rains are likely for ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony but, the high clouds will keep the day temperatures arrested. A fresh western disturbance is likely to approach Western Himalayas, late on 30thJan 2026. It will have induced cyclonic circulation over the plains. The two, together will have another round of rainfall for the capital city and suburbs. Rains may not be hefty, yet sharp and fleeting showers are likely on the weekend. To be precise, patchy rains are expected over Delhi/NCR between 31stJan and 03rdFeb 2026, giving a wet start to February 2026.
