The capital city, Delhi, skipped extreme heat in the month of March. Even the temperatures in excess of 35°C were witnessed for a total of five days, including the last four days, so far. Yes, the temperatures were on the rise for the last four days, and the highest maximum of 38.9°C was recorded on 26th March 2025. The temperature has dropped since then, and the day's high was restricted to just 36.4°C yesterday, which was still above the normal by about 3°C. The mercury is likely to plunge further and reach somewhere close to the normal over the next 2-3 days and thereafter, rise again.

The western disturbance over the mountains, which caused warming in the northern plains, including Delhi, will start clearing the region today. Hereafter, no fresh active system is expected to arrive for the next 10 days. The temperature profile will keep fluctuating during this period.

The westerly systems leave some pool of cold air in the rear section. This is the feature that will result in a drop in temperatures over Delhi/NCR. Furthermore, due to the buildup of a pressure gradient, the surface and low-level winds will become stronger. This will further mitigate the heat factor over a wider area. Delhi can expect a maximum temperature restricted to 33°-34°C today and tomorrow. The slowdown of winds and absence of any weather system will lead to a rise in the temperature from Sunday, 30th March onwards.

Heat is likely to pick up in the first week of April. The week will start with a maximum of 35°-36°C and possibly close to about 40°C, the first of this season.  As per the pentad normal, the month of April starts with a day temperature of 34°C and rises to an average of 39°C at the fag end of the month. The mean maximum temperature for the month of April is 36.5°C, as against the mean of 29.9°C for March. This is the biggest jump among the months, transitioning from one to the next. Heat is expected to catch up fast in April. The month will see an increased number of hot and heat wave days with a noticeable rise in the intensity, as well.
