This August May Be Among The Driest For Bengaluru

Southwest monsoon has remained weak over South Peninsula in the month of August. Sub- Division of South Interior Karnataka has been the most deficit of the state’s 3 meteorological divisions. The state capital Bengaluru figures among the large deficit cities during this month. There is no likelihood of catching up in the remaining days of the month. The city could end up with the most August on record of the last couple of decades.

Bengaluru city observatory has recorded 11.6mm rainfall between 01st and 21st August 2021. The HAL observatory is marginally  ahead with 12.2mm. August is one of the rainiest month during southwest monsoon with an average of 162.7mm rainfall.  Last year, the city measured above normal rainfall of 274mm in August. Because of paucity of rains, the day temperature has invariably remained >/= 30°C, normal by about 2-3°C.

Southwest monsoon is expected to go weak again for the central and southern parts of the country.  No monsoon system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal. Also, the Peninsular trough and the off shore trough is expected to remain weak. No significand amount of rainfall is likely in the remaining days of the month. Light patchy rain of short duration in some areas will be a regular feature but not providing any bid relief as such.  Bengaluru, on an average experiences 10 rainy days in the month when the rainfall is more than 2.5mm in 24hours. The city has recorded just one day so far with rainfall of 8mm. Rest all the occasions, the rainfall remained less than 2mm.

There is an outside chance for some moderate showers in some parts of the city, tomorrow. Remaining days of this month will just have light passing showers of insignificant amount. Most of the days will observe partly cloudy sky with fleeting drizzle during evening hours.
