Kerala receives widespread thundershowers

April 23, 2014 12:41 PM |

The cloudy weather in Kerala gave widespread rain in the state on Tuesday. Many cities recorded light to moderate spells. According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, thundershowers are expected to continue in the state for the entire week.

Some of the places that recorded rain in the last 24 hours were: Punalur – 23.6 mm, Kochi – 6.8 mm, Alapuzha – 5.8 mm and Thiruvananthapuram – 0.6 mm.

“The weather in South India had been largely dry for the last few days, with isolated or scattered showers at times. It was only after a week or so that the state recorded widespread showers”, says G.P Sharma of Skymet Meteorology Division.

Currently Kerala is facing a rain deficit of over 50%. However, weathermen tell us that moderate rain spells expected in the coming days could cover up the deficit.

So far Thiruvananthapuram which receives 118 mm of rain in the month of April has only received about 54 mm of rain. On the other hand Kochi has recorded 37 mm of rain so far against the monthly average of 94.8 mm.

“Thundershowers in April and May are sudden and sporadic in nature. There are times when just one moderate spell gives anywhere between 20 to 50 mm of rain. Therefore, the rainfall figures so far might be below normal. And with two more moderate spells expected, the deficit in rain could get covered up easily”, added G.P Sharma.

There have been instances (9th of April) when places like Kozhikode have recorded 75 mm of rain in 24 hours. Thiruvananthapuram too had received a moderate spell and recorded 24 mm of rain on the 15th of April.

In the monsoon foreshadow 2014, released by Skymet Weather on the 15th of April, it was stated that peninsular India is at the least risk of a weak monsoon as compared to Central India.
