An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 jolted northern Pakistan on Tuesday evening. However, no casualties or property damages have been reported so far.

As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), tremors were felt in Peshawar, Chitral, Swat, Abottabad, Haripur, Bajaur Agency, Nathia Gali, Kohistan, Mansehra, Buner and adjoining areas. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fata, Punjab, Islamabad and some areas of Baluchistan also felt the upheaval of the earth’s crust.

Moreover, parts of India and particularly the Jammu and Kashmir region too experienced the trembling. The Poonch sector in Srinagar and Kishtwar districts and Mirzpur Azad of Kashmir Valley also felt the tremors.

The USGS confirms that the earthquake hit the region at around 7.12 pm (local time). The epicenter of the quake was Dushanbe in Tajikistan. The trembling was felt at 133.8km below the earth’s crust and 48 km east-northeast of Shughnon, Tajikistan.

The shaking of the earth’s crust was strong enough to cause panic among the locals in Pakistan. People came out of their houses or shops while they were busy reciting their religious Quran verses.
