5.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Nunavut, Canada

The year 2017 started off with a list of earthquakes shaking the earth, the strongest until today was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake felt at Fiji, also including a 5.3 magnitude quake that shook New Zealand and the recent introduction is Canada.

North Canada particularly, the Nunavut territory, offshore near Canada was shaken by an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude on Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake that trembled the Nunavut Territory struck at around 5:47 CT is just 28 km far from the nearest coast. The depth of the quake was about 19 kilometers and was centered 55 miles (89 km) southeast of a small Inuit, thinly dense hamlet on Cornwallis Island in Nunavut, Canada.

The U.S. Geological Survey states that the seismic activity which was originally measured at magnitude 6.4 has not caused severe damages to the territory. No casualties or fatalities were reported. Moreover, any reports of tsunami threats were also not raised yet.

Prior to this, on January 6, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was observed below the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of North Vancouver Island at around 7:49 a.m. PT. This quake was observed 10 kilometers below the earth’s crust however, no shaking was reported.
