Bid adieu to salt for a healthy heart

When one finds it too hard to answer life’s difficult questions, humans often turn towards their so-called slave, Science. While science ends up solving most of our problems, sometimes all we come down to is even more uncertainties.

The same goes when the question of salt arises, two schools of thought think way differently. While some studies suggest that taking in a little too much of salt may be bad for your heart, others explain that too little sodium in your body can also prove to be hazardous.

However, too much of anything is bad for our body. Consuming sodium in excess increases the blood pressure and can also result in fluid retention. High blood pressure, which eventually results in hypertension is the root cause for stroke, heart attacks as well as cardiovascular problems.

Bid adieu to salt for a healthy heart

The recommended consumption of salt per day is 2 gm, which is almost half the amount of salt we usually consume. With that sinful bag of chips or that toothsome bowl of french fries, how can one stop too much intake of salt?  The cravings of a cigarette or a glass of whisky can still be put to a halt, but those mouthwatering salty foods make you happy. How do you give up that happiness? It’s too hard isn’t it?

If the average sodium intake was anywhere close to 2000 mg, you would see 1.65 million fewer people die every year. Yes, it is that much. And, you are not only doing your heart a favour, you are also getting rid of those extra pounds by reducing your salt intake.

The hazardous effects of eating too much salt are difficult to ignore. Also, you need to be very clear as to how much salt is too much and how little is too little. It does take quite a lot of time to get used to the less salty food, but isn’t it worth the effort?
