Another week of surplus rain in India

Patna RainIt is yet another week of excess rain in India. According to the data available with Skymet meteorology Division, the week from April 16 to April 22 has observed 63% of surplus rain. Unlike the previous week the rainfall has been scattered and not confined to particular pockets.

For instance, the sub-divisions of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha in East India have experienced a rainfall deficit of 32% and 48%, respectively. While Bihar and Jharkhand in the same region have been surplus by 53% and 40% respectively.

In North India, the hill state of Jammu and Kashmir along with few sub-divisions in the plains have performed well. Against 19.6 mm of weekly rain, Jammu and Kashmir has received 59.5 mm of rain. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed 19 mm of rain again 14.8 mm, which is only 29% surplus. Punjab on the other hand has recorded 12.1 mm of rain against the weekly average of 3.1 mm.

The rainfall activity in South India has also been scattered. The sub-divisions of Telangana and Rayalaseema have been deficit by 34% and 24%, respectively. While Tamil Nadu with 41.1 mm of rain against 12 mm and coastal Karnataka with 19.6 mm of rain against 5.4 mm have been surplus by 243% and 263%, respectively.

Out of the 36 sub-divisions 17 have observed surplus rain this week. While six sub-divisions have recorded normal rain and 9 have been deficient. Only one sub-division has been scanty.
