Saraswati Puja is the one of the biggest festivals for Bengalis and especially students and their teachers. Bongs eagerly wait for this day. Well, that’s not just for the ceremonies and Prasad.

Saraswati Puja is nothing less than Valentine’s Day for Bongs. ‘Probashi Bengalis’, meaning Bengalis living out of Bengal, might not relate to the fullest but the ones in West Bengal will definitely smile at this statement. It is the day when young hearts get a free license to celebrate ‘prem’ or love.

And, why not! Here are the reasons.

Day to skip studies

It’s a day to say no to books. And, why should you? Mom has asked you not to study. Even though board exams are nearing, you can skip studying today.

Surrender the books at Ma Saraswati’s feet and go hang out with friends. Needless to say, that special friend is a part of the group.

It’s the love season

We celebrate Saraswati Puja on the day of ‘Vasant-Panchami’, meaning the Festive Spring. On this day, we welcome spring or ‘Bosonto’ which means love.

At this time of the year the winter chill reduces and flowers start blooming, and of course, there is love in the air.

You have to be at your traditional best today, be it girls or boys. And women in traditional ‘Basanti’ or yellow sarees are definitely at their best. Men don’t lack behind when it comes to showing off their ‘pajama-panjabis’.

You can’t miss teenage girls and boys walking awkwardly in their sarees or dhotis. But, we have to accept that they look damn cute.

Today, no one will comment on you. Even if you take your girl on a bike ride in your damn colony itself. No one will care about your overly-decked up look. Seems like, every couple is free to walk hand in hand.

No rules

Only day when bong teenagers do not need permission of parents to stay out. Happy Saraswati Puja! Go to schools, colleges, tuition classes or the lovers’ park, stay out as long as you want.

Guys save up money for this day to impress their lady love. And guess with what? Puchkas and Jhalmuris! Yes, time has changed and these days teenagers enjoy more going for movies but puchkas will remain in the to-do-list forever.

Great day to pop the Question

Bengali guys generally have a tendency to open up on this day. Weather, ambience, parks, restaurants and everything supports the cause. They expect that the answer will be a typical bong smile.
