Food Hangover

It takes a lot of courage to say no to good food. But there is a limit to everything (or rather there should be a limit to everything) and we must not cross that limit. Not many people know about the most common by-product of over-eating; a food hangover.

Yes, a ‘food’ hangover. What is a food hangover? Overeating leads to a food hangover which refers to excessive intake of food in a short period of time. The worst part is that most of us don’t even realize that we have a food hangover. Generally, people ignore most food associated ailments as a stomach problem. But that may not be the case every time.

If you too end up hogging on more food than you should, then there is a very good chance that you too may be suffering from a food hangover on a regular basis. There are a few symptoms of food hang over which you should watch out for. Bloating is one of the most common symptoms of a food hangover. This can change the size of your waist for a good 10-12 hours. Other than this, you are bound to feel lethargic most of the time. Despite getting proper sleep, you may feel kind of drowsy and inactive. Stomach upsets and heartburn are other symptoms of a food hangover and must not be ignored.

Thankfully, there are ways to counter a food hangover. You can start by relaxing yourself and counting calories. What this does is that it helps you keep a tab on how much you are consuming and keeps stress at bay. Most of the time, we end up eating more than we should when we are stressed. Also, keeping a pack of sugar-free chewing gum in your bag can also be helpful. Chewing gum helps stimulate saliva and can help galvanize the digestion process. Other options include consumption of green tea which is a great weight-buster and can also help tackle your food hangover. Other than this, drinking water and taking a walk remain the most highly advised options to take down a food hangover.

Usually it is the oily, greasy, fatty, spicy, and sugary food that messes up your digestion process and leads to a food hangover. Experts believe that taking a heavy breakfast and avoiding a heavy meal a night are also good ways of preventing over-eating and food hangovers. So be sure to fight off over-indulgence and try and track your food consumption. Or else, there’s a very good chance that you may end up with more than one type of hangover the next time you decide to wine and dine.
