In an attempt to revive the state economy, Uttarakhand government is all set to pitch Kedarnath as a hub for winter sports, when the shrine closes during winter months.
The region, which is famous for an eighth century Lord Shiva temple, has been deemed fit to become a heaven for adventure sports in winter. The decision is aimed at re-establishing tourism in the region after the catastrophic floods of June 2013.
Kedarnath is located at a height of 11,755 feet and is the source of Mandakini River. It is situated at a distance of about 110 km from Dehradun, by air. The scenic town is home to some mind blowing picturesque locations. The slopes, the trails, and the flat open spaces all act as pre-requisites for adventure sport in winter.
The region witnesses chilly weather conditions during winter every year. The winter season in Kedarnath stretches from November to April. Temperature in the town crashes below the freezing point and snowfall is a common sight. Kedarnath’s pristine beauty and rich mythological past are enough to attract tourists each year.
With adventure sports gaining momentum across the country, Kedarnath is a little late to arrive on the scene. But as the sacred town rebuilds itself, the idea of hosting adventure sports in winter will do well to pump money into the state economy.
Authorities plan to fly tourists and adventure freaks in a copter, from Guptkashi at a tentative price of Rs. 5,000 to 7,000, and provide adventure sport facilities. It is a wise move and will surely go a long way in establishing Kedarnath as a major tourist hub in near future.
