Dust storm activity expected in plains of North India and Uttar Pradesh

May 22, 2015 1:36 PM |

Dust stormPunjab, Haryana, Delhi, north Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh are observing hot weather conditions at the moment. The national capital Delhi saw the day temperature settle at 42.6°C on Thursday, which is 3 degrees above the monthly normal. In adjoining Haryana, Hisar was sizzling at 44.5°C, while Chandigarh in Punjab recorded the day temperature at 42.3°C, which is 4 degrees above the normal average for the month.

However, in the next 24 hours brief respite is expected from the scorching heat, in form of dust storm and thundershower activity.

At present there is a feeble Western Disturbance affecting the western Himalayan region and is expected to give scattered rain over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

An induced cyclonic circulation is also forming over Central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab. Due to the system moist winds from the southeast and southwest direction will reach up to Punjab Haryana and Delhi-NCR, raising the humidity level in the region.

When the temperatures are high and humidity increases, cumulonimbus clouds form, which are vertically developed clouds. During the pre-Monsoon season these clouds are capable of causing dust storm and thunderstorm activity. Sometimes cumulonimbus clouds can lead to light precipitation as well.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the dust storm activity is expected during late afternoon or evening hours. The activity is likely to begin from the evening of May 21 and continue till the weekend.
