Fresh Monsoon system developing in Bay of Bengal

September 2, 2015 11:55 PM |

Rain in West BengalIn the last few days rainfall has been mostly confined to East and Northeast India. Initially the cyclonic circulation over Bihar and Jharkhand influenced weather in the region. Thereafter, the Monsoon trough shifted closer to the foothills of the Himalayas, bringing intense weather activity in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

Now we can see a change of events. A cyclonic circulation can be seen over Bangladesh and adjoining North Bay of Bengal. The cloud configuration in the region also suggests that a fresh Monsoon system is developing in the Bay. However, for the time being most of its activities are confined to Bangladesh and the sea area. Coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal will receive scattered rains only.

The system might organize into a low pressure area. However, several other weather models are not suggesting intensification. This could be apparently due to high wind shear over northern parts of Bay of Bengal.

During next 24 hours, scattered rains are likely in coastal areas of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. With incursion of moisture during hot afternoon hours, even interiors of Odisha and West Bengal could receive some good showers.

Skymet will keep a watch on the system, which may or may not sustain strength for a sufficient time period.
