Entire northern plains have been observing dry weather conditions for the past four to five days. Not only this, the onset of Southwest Monsoon has also been delayed over several parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Other parts of North India have also been desperately waiting for Monsoon rains. Due to the ongoing dry weather conditions, the rainfall deficiency over the Northern plains has only soared. The only region observing rainfall surplus happens to be Punjab which is in excess by 17 percent.
Currently, East Uttar Pradesh is rain deficient by 28 percent, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are observing a deficit of 29 percent. Since June 25, almost the entire Northern plains have been witnessing dry weather conditions.
These dry weather conditions can be attributed to the formation of a low pressure area over west-central Bay of Bengal. Due to this, moist winds were concentrated around that system only resulting in a reduction of moisture incursion over the Northern Plains.
However, now the weather system has diffused. Not only this, the Monsoon trough is also expected to shift towards the Northern Plains which was until now giving rains over Central India.
Thus now rainfall activity is expected over entire Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. These rains will be widespread in nature and will continue till July 5 and 6. The foothills of Uttar Pradesh could witness a few heavy spells during this period.
As rainfall activity is expected to pick up pace, Southwest Monsoon is likely to cover entire North India including Delhi and the NCR region during the next two to three days. July may also end on a surplus note.
