Hot and humid Chennai to get relief with onset of Monsoon 2016

May 27, 2016 7:03 AM |

weather-in-ChennaiChennai continues to battle hot weather for the last few days. More than high maximum temperatures, it’s the high levels of humidity which is making the day extremely uncomfortable.

After witnessing record breaking rains on May 20, the capital city has been dry and day maximums have been on rising trend. Temperatures over Chennai are settling in the range of 39°C to 41°C, which are 2-4 degrees above normal. On Thursday, city recorded maximum temperature at 39.6°C, while on Wednesday it had witnessed 41°C.

Not only this, minimum temperatures are also settling several notches above the season’s average. With no rains in offing, we do not expect any changes in the weather conditions for next two days. Skymet Weather predicts that relief is only likely with the onset of Southwest Monsoon over Indian mainland. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers may occur over Chennai on May 29 and May 30. According to weathermen as we move closer to the onset of Monsoon, the Monsoon winds start blowing over Peninsular India all across Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.

Thereafter as the Monsoon sets in, it also changes the air mass that triggers the rain and thundershowers. Skymet Weather has already predicted above normal Monsoon to the tune of 109% of long period average (LPA) of 887 mm for the four month period from June to September.
