With 50 mm of rainfall in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Kochi rain has surpassed its monthly average of 25.9 mm. This is also the second highest rainfall ever recorded in February, with the highest being 141.6 mm of rain recorded on February 27, 2011.
Besides Kochi, entire state of Kerala has recorded light to moderate rainfall during last 24 hours. Punalur recorded 21.2 mm of rain, Kottayam 10.4 mm, Alappuzha 6.2 mm, and Thiruvananthapuram 1.8 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, the weather activity can be attributed to the trough extending along the Kerala and South Karnataka coast. The system has already been giving isolated light showers over few parts of the coastal state for the last 2-3 days. We expect rain activity to continue over Kerala for another 24 hours. Thereafter, the trough is likely to become insignificant which will lead to a significant drop in rainfall.
January and February are the least rainy months of the year. Post the withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon, rain activity reduces significantly over the state. But due to its close proximity to the coast, any weather system developing in South Arabian Sea or along the West Coast keeps giving on and off rains over Kerala.
