Overnight rain, hailstorm lash Kolkata

rain kolkata mainA prolonged dry spell for over a month has finally come to an end in Kolkata as the city of joy was seen rejoicing due to pre-Monsoon showers. Major relief has been seen from the scorching heat as light rain along with hailstorm resulted in significant drop in temperature.

Kolkata received 5 mm of rain on May 3 and trace on May 4. However, yesterday, the city was lashed by hailstorm during midnight and rain continued till today morning. Due to the rain activity, temperatures have skidded to low 30s from 40°C in a span of three days.

Minimum temperatures were also soaring in absence of any weather activity. They were settling 3-4 degrees above normal leading to humid and discomfiting nights in the city. However, pre-Monsoon showers have brought the temperature to near normal as it settled at 24.6°C.

As previously stated, the weather activity is due to a cyclonic circulation marked over Bihar and adjoining West Bengal. A trough is also extending from this system up to Odisha across Gangetic West Bengal.

The weather system has also given widespread rain over parts of West Bengal that includes Coochbehar 17 mm, Burdwan 22 mm, and Jalpaiguri 6 mm.

The weather activity is likely to continue for another 24 to 48 hours, providing relief from the searing heatwave like conditions to the residents of Kolkata.
