Heatwave in BhunabeswarUpdated on May 6, 2016 11:45 PM (IST): At last pre-Monsoon rains reach Bhubaneswar, mercury drops to 30°C

Pre-Monsoon rains have finally made an appearance over Bhubaneswar on Friday afternoon.

The ongoing activity has dropped day temperatures significantly to 30°C at 2:30 pm from 41°C at 12:30 pm.

According to Skymet Weather, the rain and thundershowers have been on account of a trough moving across the interior parts of Odisha. This is also first spell of pre-Monsoon showers over the capital city.

The rain has brought much needed relief for the city which was under the grip of severe heatwave conditions on Thursday.

Moving on further, weather conditions remain favourable for more rain and thundershower activities during the next 2-3 days predicts weathermen. This will keep day maximums under check in coming days.

Bhubaneswar has been practically dry for almost last two months barring few days in March and April that had recorded either traces of rainfall or below 1 mm.

Updated on May 6, 2016 11:45 PM (IST): Pre-Monsoon rains escape Bhubaneswar, mercury soars to 43.5°C

While most parts of the country are rejoicing with pre-Monsoon rains, Bhubaneswar in Odisha is still battling blazing hot weather conditions.

On Thursday, the capital city of Odisha was under the grip of severe heatwave conditions as mercury soared to 43.5°C. This was six degrees above the season’s average.

According to Skymet Weather, clear sky on account of lack of any pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers has led to steep rise in the day maximums.

So far, Bhubaneswar has remained practically dry since the beginning of April. The city had only recorded traces of rainfall back on April 8. Though its nearby areas like Chandbali and Balasore have recorded some rain in last 24 hours but rain activity escaped Bhubaneswar.

At present, a trough is running through Odisha and thus weather is partly cloudy over the city but chances of rain are very few. However, isolated light showers cannot be ruled out but it will not be of much help. Further, no relief is likely for at least next 48 hours as we do not foresee any rains over the city that could bring down the temperature. However, we can anticipate some rains after three days.

As we progress further, we expect pre-Monsoon rains to pick up pace over the city. The average rainfall for Bhubaneswar in May amounts to 97.3 mm.
