Rain in Tamil Nadu reduces significantly

Rain in Tamil NaduAs the Northeast Monsoon weakens, Tamil Nadu witnessed significant reduction in rainfall barring few coastal places on Friday. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rain intensity has reduced considerably over the south peninsular region and is now confined to coastal parts only.

In the span of last 24 hours, only Tondi and Karaikal recorded rainfall in double digits with 26.4 mm and 25 mm, respectively. While other places such as Nagapattinam observed 9.4 mm of rain, Pamban 8.9 mm, Pallayamkottai 8.6 mm, Kanyakumari 8.6 mm, Kodaikanal 7 mm and Madurai 7 mm.

According to Skymet, rain will further reduce in couple of days both in terms of intensity and spread. However, we can expect one last spell of light rain after next 48 hours.

As we are already in the last leg of Northeast Monsoon, there will only be minimal rain in the last weak of the month.

Last week, Northeast Monsoon gave some good rain to the southern peninsula, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Rain in Tamil Nadu has been 82% excess in the week ending December 17, with 33.8 mm of rain being recorded against the weekly average of 18.5 mm.

With this spell of rain, the state has made up for the rain deficit, which stood at 3% till last week.  From October 1 till December 20 the state has received 419.6 mm of rain against the normal of 420.8 mm.
