Rain in the offing for Maharashtra

May 3, 2016 6:04 PM |

Rain in the offing for MaharashtraThe state of Maharashtra remained mostly dry during the month of April. While light rain occurred over some parts of the state, they weren’t enough to bring significant relief from the severe drought situation in the state.

The state of Maharashtra is divided into four divisions including Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Coastal Maharashtra. Due to its vast geographical distribution, a single weather system does not affect the entire state. Rainfall occurs in pockets.

Pre-Monsoon rains are patchy in nature over Maharashtra and occur during the latter part of the day on account of heat accumulation over the region. During the Pre-Monsoon season, two weather systems become a semi-permanent feature.

One of them being the trough extending from Central India to Interior Peninsular India. Another system is the wind discontinuity which extends from Maharashtra to Telangana and gives more rain as compared to the trough. The wind discontinuity gives more rain over the interior areas of Peninsular India and causes lesser activity over the coast.

Owing to these weather systems, Vidarbha and Marathwada get more rain as compared to areas in Madhya Maharashtra. Least weather activity takes place in Coastal Maharashtra.

During the next four to five days, these weather features will result in isolated rainfall activity over several parts of Maharashtra including Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha. Coastal region will remain dry.

These rains will be patchy in nature and will not be as intense. A few areas in Maharashtra may also receive some hailstorm activity as well.
