Relief from chilly weather as cold wave abates in North India

January 16, 2017 12:30 PM |

Winters in India

After witnessing bone-chilling cold during the last few days, the northern plains of the country finally managed to observe some relief from the chilly weather. People in the national capital and adjoining regions woke up to fog-free mornings.

Due to sunny spells showing up in Delhi and NCR along with at a few regions over Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and North Uttar Pradesh, cold wave conditions have been completely abated. This has also added to a significant rise in minimum temperatures across the aforesaid regions.

Another factor that has contributed to rising minimums over the northern plains is a cyclonic circulation that persists over Punjab and adjoining Rajasthan. Due to this weather system, the cold westerly and northwesterly winds have not been able to reach the northern plains thereby resulting in an increase in temperature.

On Saturday, Delhi recorded the lowest minimum of the season with the temperature plummeting to 3.2°C which was four degrees below the season’ average for the capital of the nation. However, during last 24 hours, temperatures rose considerably.

In a span of 24 hours, the temperature of Delhi settled at 8.9°C which is 2 notches above the normal. Other regions in North India that have witnessed above normal temperatures include Amritsar 7°C, Ferozepur 9.5°C, Faridabad 9.4°C and Gurugram 8.6°C respectively.

As per Skymet Weather, now, back to back Western Disturbances are expected over the northern hills of the country. This would further result in the minimum temperatures to stay above normal across North India. No significant downfall in the minimum temperature is likely and thus, people residing in the northern plains including Delhi and surrounding regions can expect a respite from the chilly weather.
