Southwest Monsoon revives, covers almost entire India

September 22, 2015 12:15 PM |

Monsoon RevivesDespite in its withdrawal phase, Southwest Monsoon revived over India with robust showers in last one week. Cloudy and wet weather covered Odisha, Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat and Rajasthan during the past week, giving much needed respite from the humid and hot weather.

While rains started to affect South Peninsula and Central India, the Monsoon paced towards Northwest India gradually. Scattered rain and thundershowers persisted for 3-4 consecutive days in these areas, leading to pleasant weather across the region. Rains will continue over North India for another 24-48 hours and recede thereafter, while Southwest Monsoon will remain active over Northeast India for next couple of days.

This recovery of rains has been attributed to the weather systems that originated in the Bay of Bengal. While a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal on 17th September and gave moderate to heavy rainfall over Kerala, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, Punjab and Haryana, another low pressure area in the Bay has been instrumental in giving wet weather over East India including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and parts of Northeast India including Meghalaya and Sikkim.

The rainy spell has been helpful to a large number of crops such as pulses, cereals and rice that were facing a critical time due to a long haul in Monsoon rains. September had begun with dry and hot weather that was stressful for the farmers in crop growing states.

Improvement in rainfall deficiency

Owing to good rain in past few days, rainfall deficiency in many areas has improved substantially. For instance, Central India that was staring at a rainfall deficiency of 20% is now standing at a deficiency of 13%. Saurashtra and Kutch region was suffering from a rainfall deficiency of 5% which has now improved due to heavy rain in past few days and has turned positive as rainfall is now in excess by 7% than the normal. Rainfall deficiency improved marginally for South Peninsula region as well.
