Price rise of 45% keeps seasonal fruits out of reach

May 29, 2015 12:24 PM |

fruitsAs if dearer vegetables were not enough, prices of fruits have also shot up by as much as 45 per cent in metros and major cities across India. Hit by unseasonal rains in past few months, the harvest of key vegetables and fruits was severely impacted, converting ‘affordable’ seasonal fruits into ‘exotic’ ones.

For instance, while litchi was available for 80-100 kg in last summer, is now garnering a price of 150-170 kg.  Prices have also gone up in case of other fruits like bananas which used to sell at Rs 30-40 per dozen in the past year and are now available for Rs 60-65 per dozen. Not to forget the king of fruits, Mango, which is reaping a price tag of Rs 100 per kg.

The impact has been severe in the major cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi where most of the middle class population has been forced to shell out for the fresh fruits this summer that are important to keep oneself hydrated.

The price rise has been revealed by Assocham’s recent survey that was conducted for the period of March-May and interviewed over 1,000 housewives and 1,000 employees.
