Northeast Monsoon is playing on a weaker side over the Indian sub-continent but is active over Sri Lanka. For the last many days, the various parts of the country have been witnessing on and off light to moderate rains.

The last 24 hours were also no different for the country as most parts of Sri Lanka have recorded light to moderate spells. Though the intensity of rains was more over the southern parts of the country as against the districts of North Sri Lanka.

In a span of 24 hours, from 08:30 am as on Wednesday, Pottuvil recorded 63.4 mm of moderate rains, Nuwara Eliya 49.1 mm, Hambantota 36.2 mm, Trincomalee 31.3 mm, Batticaloa 20.1 mm, Anuradhapura 16.1 mm and Ratmalana 14.1 mm and Jaffna witnessed 2 mm of rains.

The reason for these rains as per Skymet Weather can be attributed to the persistence of a cyclonic circulation which is seen over the Comorin area. Moreover, a trough is also extending from Southeast Bay of Bengal to Comorin area across Sri Lanka.

In the wake of this, light to moderate with isolated heavy rains are expected to continue over Sri Lanka. Though in the next 24-48 hours, the intensity is expected to reduce marginally as compared with the last 24 hours’ rains.

The intensity of rains is likely to pace up once again by December 27 when moderate to heavy rains are anticipated to continue till the month end. Normally Sri Lanks receives good rains throughout Northeast Monsoon that falls between October and December.
