Envelop Of 45 Degree Expands: Vidarbha Remains Hottest Region
Key Takeaways:
- Vidarbha and East Uttar Pradesh are currently the hottest regions in the country
- Banda and Wardha were the first to cross the 45°C mark this season
- Heat wave conditions are persisting across central India and eastern Uttar Pradesh
- The 45°C heat zone is expected to expand further across central and northern India
With the pre-monsoon heat catching up, Gujarat in the west and Odisha on the eastern flank usually become the hottest pockets. However, this pattern is missing this season so far. More often, Rajkot, Surendranagar, and Morbi in Gujarat, and Bolangir, Titlagarh, and Sambalpur in Odisha, are among the first to reach the 45°C mark. Interiors of Maharashtra and Telangana match this scale a little later in the season. However, Vidarbha and East Uttar Pradesh have emerged as the hotspots of extreme temperatures so far this season.
Banda in Uttar Pradesh was the first city to clock 45°C on 17th April 2026. The very next day, Wardha in Vidarbha became the second city to reach this mark. Yesterday, Wardha and Akola both recorded the highest temperature of 45°C in the country, while Banda recorded a maximum of 43.6°C. Vidarbha and East Uttar Pradesh have sizzled under extreme heat during the past 24 hours. Nagpur, Gondia, Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Brahmapuri, and Amravati recorded temperatures around 43°-44°C yesterday. In fact, Nagpur and Amravati exceeded 44°C by 0.4°C and 0.2°C, respectively. The entire Vidarbha region is nearly experiencing heat wave conditions.
Over East Uttar Pradesh, the hottest stations have been Prayagraj (44.6°C), Varanasi (44.2°C), Sultanpur (43.8°C), and Fursatganj (43.1°C). These mercury levels amount to heat wave conditions over these areas.
High temperatures will persist over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra for the next three days. Thereafter, in anticipation of weather activity over Maharashtra, day temperatures will drop by 2-4°C. No weather activity is expected over East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining regions. A few stations may reach the 45°C mark in the next 2-3 days.
Temperatures are likely to increase over Odisha between 21st and 24th April. Mercury is unlikely to rise significantly over parts of Gujarat. Overall, the envelope of 45°C is expected to expand further and cover more areas, particularly over the central and eastern parts of the country. Heat wave conditions are also expected to reach some pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi during this week.
