Typhoon Kalmaegi To Intensify Further: Strike Vietnam Tonight
A powerful typhoon ‘Kalmaegi’ struck the Philippines earlier this week on Tuesday/Wednesday and is now heading toward Vietnam. The storm caused mayhem in the Philippines, killing 114 people, with over 100 still missing. The president has declared a state of emergency and a national calamity. The central provinces were the worst hit in the deadliest natural disaster to strike the country this year. Most of the deaths were due to drowning in flash floods. After tearing through the vast stretch of central regions, the storm is now approaching the eastern shore of Vietnam.
The authorities in Vietnam are bracing to meet the challenge of the typhoon strike as it approaches the coastline tonight. The financial hub, Ho Chi Minh City, faces a heightened risk of severe flooding as high tides are expected to coincide with heavy rainfall from the typhoon. The storm may show slight mercy as sea surface temperatures are dropping off the coastline of Vietnam. The typhoon, currently a Category 4 equivalent hurricane, may weaken to Category 2 before making landfall due to loss of heat potential. Still, a Category 2 hurricane means winds in excess of 170 km/h. The combination of torrential rains and blasting winds is always deadly and carries catastrophic damage potential.
The typhoon will weaken after making landfall tonight. It will travel westward across the border areas of Laos and Cambodia and enter Thailand as a weakened storm. Continuing its westward track, the system will finally enter the east-central Bay of Bengal as a low-pressure area late on November 8 or early November 9, 2025. Model predictability decreases after a lead time of about 4–5 days. Further forecasts and updates will be shared later.
Another potential typhoon, Tropical Storm-32, is waiting in the wings over the Philippine Sea. The storm is picking up strength and will track across the northern parts of the Philippines before entering the South China Sea early next week.
