Severe weather to strike Florida on Thursday

January 27, 2016 2:05 PM |

florida rainWet and windy weather is likely to impact Florida from Wednesday onwards. This will bring severe weather across the state accompanied by flooding downpours.

Over 25 mm of rain is expected for cities like Tampa, Orlando and Miami on Wednesday into Thursday. This is because of moisture incursion across the state. Some of the places could receive more than 75 mm of rain by Thursday night.

However, northern cities like Jacksonville and Tallahassee will get some rain as well. This rainfall will not be as heavy as to the south.

The heavy rain will cause flooding risks across Florida on Wednesday and Thursday with major focus on central and southern Florida. In places with poor drainage, heavy rainfall will cause temporary flooding. This might cause inundation of roads and cause travel disruptions.

Not only will the moisture incursion lead to heavy rains but will also cause severe thunderstorms. However, this will not be widespread but, the strongest of the thunderstorms could bring damaging winds and possibly some tornadoes.

Power outages and damage to property is possible as the storms move through the region. People in the regions have been advised to take shelter if they hear thunder claps of the approaching thunderstorm.

This stormy weather is expected to reduce before the weekend as a high-pressure system develops which will clear off the rain and thunderstorms by Friday. This will result in dry weather during the weekend and the start of next week.
