You will probably agree - football comebacks are epic. Everyone falls into the pit of hopelessness, grief, heartbreak, and darkness. But the best part of such falls is when they get up, dust off their helplessness, and continue through the dark. They ultimately reach the light once they get out of the pit.

And that’s why you’ve so many punters trying out their luck with football betting. It’s fun, and exciting and puts their game knowledge to the test! You can click here to learn more about how exciting betting on your favourite football matches can be.

Similarly, in football, there have been iconic comebacks as determined and brave footballers have raised the bar and inspired their fans worldwide. They rose above criticism, failure, losses, and odds.

The Best Football Comebacks

1. Premier League, Newcastle United (4-4) Arsenal, 2011

After Newcastle’s loss of their important players like Andy Carroll to Liverpool and the injured Shola Ameobi, there seemed to be no hope against Arsenal.

Within less than a minute, Arsenal had made smooth progress with four goals against Newcastle United. But Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote saved the day as the match turned in their favor. Newcastle became the first team to recover from four goals in the Premier League.

Indeed, it was a legendary moment in the history of comebacks in football.

2. Champions League, Liverpool (4-0) Barcelona, 2019

Liverpool needed serious luck to recover in this match. Divock Okoth Origi became the man of the moment as he changed Liverpool’s fortune, at the last moment. Perhaps, they need a “never give up until the end” attitude and maybe a sprinkle of luck.

3. World Cup, West Germany (3-2) Hungary, 1954

This comeback was so good that it earned the title, “The Miracle of Bern”. The Mighty Magyars from Hungary had already dominated West Germany at the beginning of the tournament by 8-3 goals. Most of the viewers had already concluded defeat for the Germans.

But Max Morlock and Helmut Rahn of West Germany took over the goals for Germany within 10 minutes. Toni Turek, the German Goalkeeper defended his team like a man in war. In the end, the highly-regarded team of Hungarians lost to the determined Germans.

4. Champions League, Barcelona (6-1) Paris Saint-Germain, 2017

After losing 4-0 in the first leg, Barcelona had lost hope as many stopped watching the match. What they did not know was that it was going to be their biggest regret.

Barcelona’s comeback started with Edison Cavani’s 62nd-minute goal. Their win was sealed when Sergi Roberto scored the final goal after they faced a penalty(Neymar’s controversial kick). Talk about resurrections!
UEFA Champions League saw the largest comeback in its history. The comeback is famously called “la Remontada” (literally, the comeback).

5. Tournament of Nations, USA Women (4-3) Brazil Women, 2017

After losing three times in the same year, USA women’s team was losing its spark. Brazil seemed to be leading the match but maybe was not. Christen Press made a goal against Brazil in the 80th minute. From there, the match flipped its course as the Brazilian defense grew weaker.

The win for the USA was sealed when Megan Rapinoe delivered a brilliant equalizer. The San Diego crowd went wild. USA won the Tournament of Nations of 2017. Queens were born to conquer, after all.
