Things to do in Thekkady

Thekkady, more commonly known as Idukki, is a refreshing destination located at the top of the Western Ghats in God’s own country Kerala. The literal meaning of Idukki comes from the Tamil word ‘idukku’, which means a ‘narrow gauge’. It is a beautiful and largely untouched hill-station which offers scenic views and picturesque vantage points for shutterbugs.

The city is home to the world’s second and Asia’s first ever great arch dam which spreads across the River Periyar. Dense forests, covered in waves of sweeping fog, greet you on the way to Thekkady. The road to Thekkady is filled with numerous curves and loops which make the drive even more interesting. Add to all this, the freshness which the air brings and the sense of nirvana as you ascend getting closer to Thekkady.

But above all that, comes the famous Periyar National Park which is home to herds of wild elephants, bisons, deers, and other species of flora and fauna. Bamboo rafting is a fun and adventurous way of exploring the sanctuary. Tourists can also hop on to a boat for an amusing cruise through the region.

The surrounding hills in Thekkady offer more than your generic scenic views. Organized treks in Thekkady start in the morning at around 8.00 am and end in the evening. Visitors can also go for a small trek to get up close and personal with the natural beauty of Thekkady. Forests abound with sandalwood, teak, and rosewood, accompany you all along. Then there is Murikkady, about 5 km from Thekkady, which is known for plantations of coffee and spices. Another interesting location is Chellar Kovil which is home to waterfalls and cascades which will steal your attention for quite some time.

The best thing about Thekkady is that it is a hill-station for all. More than that, it is an experience which everyone can share. It is for the newlywed couples; for a group of fun-seeking friends; for a family yearning for a memorable get-together; and for the wanderer who wishes to seek solitude in the aisles of nature. There’s no point wasting time if you’re hoping for a truly refreshing experience. Thekkady is a sure shot for every traveler out there. The region experiences pleasant and mostly moderate climatic conditions throughout the year but winter remains the best time to visit the region.
