Bengaluru Gets Heavy Rainfall-Exceeds Monthly Normal
Bengaluru city recorded heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. The city observatory measured 71.2mm rainfall during this period. The airport observatory registered 40mm rainfall during this period. It rained for a longer duration yesterday and was almost non-stop in the late-night hours and this morning as well. It has stopped raining since early forenoon hours but is likely to resume later in the afternoon and evening hours.
The month of September is the rainiest for the tech city of Bengaluru. It has a normal rainfall of 212.8mm, and the city has crossed that by accumulating 233mm so far in the month. More showers are likely till the weekend. Weather activity is likely to be in the evening and night hours. After 23rd September, the showers will reduce significantly and continue till the end of the month.
There is a cyclonic circulation in the medium levels over South Interior Karnataka. Also, there is an offshore trough over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, off the Tamil Nadu coast. Yet another trough from South Maharashtra to the Southwest Bay of Bengal is passing across Telangana, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka. Under the combined influence of these features, scattered moderate rain and thundershowers are likely over the city and suburbs. This pattern is expected to continue, and repeated showers are expected till 23rd September. Thereafter, the showers, if any, will be patchy, light, and of brief duration.
The month of September accounts for 25% of the annual rainfall for the city. The second best is the month of October, with 168mm rainfall. Between December and March, the rainfall is minimal, with, on average, just one rainy day for the capital city. The variability of rainfall in the month of September is quite high. The city recorded absolutely scanty rainfall amounting to a mere 33.2mm in September 2016, whereas there was a deluge of 513.8mm rainfall in September 2017.
