Darjeeling, October 6, 2025: After days of relentless rainfall triggering massive landslides across Darjeeling, the situation in the hill district is beginning to show signs of gradual improvement. However, the tragedy has already claimed at least 24 lives, with several others still missing, thousands of tourists stranded, and vital road links severely damaged.
Heavy Rainfall and Infrastructure Damage
Landslides caused by continuous heavy rain have devastated large parts of Darjeeling district. The century-old Dudhia Bridge, an important iron bridge over the Balason River connecting Siliguri and Mirik, collapsed due to excessive rainfall, leaving several hill pockets completely cut off. Disaster management teams and local authorities have been working round the clock to rescue those trapped and restore essential connectivity.
Scattered Rain to Continue, No Threat of Cloudburst
After witnessing heavy rainfall in recent days, the weather in Darjeeling is now showing signs of gradual improvement. Light to moderate scattered rain is expected to continue over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, including Darjeeling, during the next three to four days.
The chances of intense downpours that could trigger further landslides or mudslides are almost ruled out. This will be a welcome relief for residents and authorities who have been on high alert due to the earlier spell of torrential rain.
Comfortable Temperatures, Favorable for Relief Operations
Day temperatures in Darjeeling will remain comfortable, hovering between 18°C and 19°C, while night temperatures are likely to settle between 11°C and 12°C.
There are no warnings of severe weather conditions for the district in the coming days. With the worst phase of rainfall now behind, the improving weather will help relief and rescue efforts continue smoothly, enabling authorities to focus on rehabilitation and restoration of transport links.
