Delhi was lashed with the strongest thunderstorm of the season on Saturday late night and Sunday early morning. All weather hazards attacked together to make it a high-impact weather event. Base station Safdarjung recorded 81 mm of rainfall in just about six hours. The airport Palam was a bit less with 69mm rainfall.

The inclement weather conditions resulted in flooding of roads and streets. Low-lying areas, including some underpasses, were waterlogged. Strong winds and severe lightning storms affected 400 flights due to a cascading effect.

Around 46 of these flights were diverted. Uprooting of trees and outages disrupted the transmission lines. Being Sunday, a small mercy for the commuters and officegoers, they were spared from the chaos.

This was the second downpour of the month for the city and suburbs. The first one being at the start of the month when Safdarjung recorded 77 mm of rainfall in 24 hours on 02nd May 2025. The official observatory for the capital city. Safdarjung has amassed a total of 186.4 mm of rainfall this month so far, against the normal of 29.4mm. With this, it has become the wettest May on record since 1901, overtaking the earlier highest mark of 165mm in May 2008.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over the Central Rajasthan region. With this, low-level winds have changed to easterly over Delhi. The humidity has also increased. However, the temperatures are far below normal and are not adequate enough for convective weather activity today. This circulation will shift to Northeast Rajasthan and Haryana tomorrow. The trough will run in the close proximity of Delhi. Tomorrow, the chances are a shade better for thunderstorm activity. From 28th May onwards, there will be an uptick in the pre-monsoon activity for Delhi/NCR.
