Delhi Crosses Half Way Mark: Heavy Showers Ahead During The Week
Most parts of Delhi/NCR received light to moderate showers in the past 24 hours. The weather activity started quite early in the morning and still continues over most parts. Rains are likely to cease during the second half of the day, and cloudy conditions will prevail in the evening and at night. The base station at Safdarjung recorded 19 mm of rainfall, and the Palam observatory registered 17 mm, till 8:30 a.m. in the morning. A few stations, like Ridge, Pusa, and Salwan School, recorded intense moderate showers amounting to rainfall in excess of 50 mm during the same period.
Safdarjung, the record repository of Delhi, has a normal of 226.8 mm of rainfall in the month of August. The observatory has clocked 164 mm of rainfall till this morning, crossing the halfway mark a little early in the month. Rains are expected to pick up during the second half of this week, and the city may touch the 200 mm mark by the end of this week.
The monsoon trough continues to be positioned north of Delhi in the lower levels. The western end of the trough passes through Bhatinda, Patiala, and Dehradun, and the rest of the trough runs close to the foothills up to Arunachal Pradesh. The trough is expected to change position and oscillate, maintaining close proximity to the national capital.
A cyclonic circulation has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low-pressure area will form tomorrow over the same region. This monsoon system will strengthen the easterly stream over the next few days all along the Indo-Gangetic plains. The northern plains, including Delhi, will also undergo this change and swing the monsoon trough, leading to an increase in weather activity.
Delhi will continue to have a cloudy sky and light rainfall in some areas tomorrow. With the monsoon trough passing through Delhi between 14th and 16th Aug, the intensity and spread of weather activity will increase. The trough will shift fairly south of Delhi between 17th and 21st August. Rainfall activity will slow down and become scanty, more so after 17th Aug 2025. The day temperature is unlikely to reach or exceed 35 °C during this entire period.
