Delhi Weather Update

The first week of October has rained well for Delhi, albeit against the norms. Base station Safdarjung recorded 15 mm of rainfall till 8:30 a.m. today. The observatory has gathered 90 mm of rainfall between 1st and 8th October, nearly six times higher than the monthly normal of 14.1 mm. The airport observatory Palam has registered 100 mm of rainfall so far, with a chunk of 53 mm coming in the last 24 hours. All the observatories of Delhi and NCR have recorded moderate to heavy showers during the last two days. No more showers are likely during this week, and the dry spell will extend into the next week as well.

Rainfall in Delhi was under the combined influence of a western disturbance over the mountains and cyclonic circulation in the plains of North India. The western disturbance will continue to give scattered rain and showers for the next three days, though on a reducing note. The cyclonic circulation, earlier marked over Haryana and Rajasthan with an east–west trough passing across the Delhi region, has now moved to the foothills of Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh. This feature is likely to shift eastward, along the foothills of Uttar Pradesh bordering the Nepal region.

Delhi/NCR witnessed rapid cloud development yesterday evening, lashing most of the region with sharp and intense thundershowers. Inclement weather conditions resulted in the diversion of 15 flights. Waterlogging due to heavy showers disrupted traffic, and the cascading effect continued into the morning as well. The remnant of the weather system will cause a cloudy sky, with an outside chance of passing showers in the evening over some pockets today. Clear skies with abundant sunshine are likely from tomorrow and will persist throughout the day for the next many days.

Mercury levels are expected to rise during both day and night. Earlier, maximum temperatures had plunged into the 20s, and the minimum temperature also dropped below 20°C. Day temperatures are expected to rise to about 33°–34°C, and minimums may also go up to about 22°–23°C by this weekend. Rains will take a break now and may have a ‘no show’ during the remaining days of this month.
