Key Takeaways:

  • Rare hailstorm event disrupts Pune with heavy rainfall and damage
  • Rainfall far exceeds March normal in parts of the city
  • Thunderstorm activity to reduce briefly before picking up again
  • Widespread storms expected across Maharashtra till April 7

Intense thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms struck parts of Maharashtra yesterday. Heavy hailstorms and strong thundershower activity pounded the city of Pune, disrupting traffic and damaging some assets. It is rather unusual and freak weather activity for Pune. As per historic records, hailstorm instances are rather zero for this region throughout the year. The month of March has a normal of just 3 mm rainfall, and the city was deluged in some areas. Airport Lohegaon recorded 36.6 mm, and Pashan registered 46.8 mm rainfall yesterday afternoon. The heat was building up for about the last one week, and the mercury breached 36°C during this duration. The temperature shot up to 38°C on 26th and 27th March 2026. Thundershower activity did provide some relief from heat but also impacted aviation services and damaged standing crops.

Multiple factors pooled together for lashing the city and suburbs with unseasonal and unexpected harsh weather activity. Outside the Konkan region, all the landlocked sub-divisions witnessed fairly widespread weather activity. Very heavy showers struck Poona, Satara, Jalgaon, Chandrapur, Brahmapuri, and neighbouring regions. Today, the thunderstorm activity may reduce substantially across the state, but the relief will be brief and momentary. The conditions will trigger a fresh round of thunderstorms starting tomorrow.

Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra regions will have pre-monsoon thunderstorms on 01st April and spread to cover other parts on 02nd and 03rd April. While the coastal parts will be relieved from harsh weather anytime after 04th April, the rest parts of the state will continue with thunderstorm activity. Fairly widespread and strong weather activity will go on till 07th April 2026. Some parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha will have hailstorm activity accompanied by strong winds during this period.
