Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were severely affected as heavy rain and strong winds lashed the region, leading to widespread waterlogging, massive traffic jams, and disruptions in air travel. Approximately 49 flights had to be diverted due to adverse weather conditions, highlighting the scale of the impact.

The unusual weather activity was attributed to a cyclonic circulation hovering over northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining parts of Haryana. This system triggered intense pre-monsoon showers across parts of Punjab, Haryana, and the Delhi-NCR region, catching many residents off guard.

Wind speeds reached between 70 to 80 kmph during the stormy night, toppling trees and damaging infrastructure in some areas. The abrupt and intense nature of the storm also brought a dramatic change in temperature. In Delhi, the mercury plummeted from 32°C to 22°C within a span of just one hour—from 12:30 AM to 1:30 AM. The Palam observatory recorded a sharp drop in the minimum temperature as well, falling from 27.6°C on May 24 to 19.4°C on May 25.

While this sudden change in weather brought much-needed relief from the oppressive summer heat, meteorologists caution that the cooldown is likely to be short-lived. Temperatures are expected to climb again in the coming days, as the region moves back to its typical pre-monsoon heat conditions.

Skymet continue to urge residents to remain cautious, especially with the possibility of more unstable weather patterns in the days ahead.
