Kolkata made a wet start to the month of October. The city and suburbs had moderate rains around Dussehra. Monsoon rainfall has eased out over the last two days. However, a fresh spell of showers is expected soon — possibly the last before the retreat of the monsoon. As per revised dates, the southwest monsoon withdraws from the capital city on 14th October.
Monthly rainfall reduces appreciably for the city in October. The month has a normal of 170.2 mm of rainfall, as against 282 mm in September. The variability of rainfall in October remains high and largely depends on the withdrawal phase of the monsoon. The spatial distribution of rainfall is quite significant. Even this time, in the first week of October, the Dum Dum airport observatory recorded a total of 63 mm of rainfall, whereas the regional observatory at Alipore registered nearly double, about 127 mm, during the same period.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal on 8th October. It is expected to persist over the same region till 11th October. The weather system will maintain proximity to the southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata. Later, the feature will weaken over the sea and move across northeast India as a trough.
Under the influence of this circulation, Kolkata and its suburbs are likely to experience scattered rain and thundershowers between 8th and 11th October 2025. A few spells of moderate rainfall accompanied by strong gusty winds cannot be ruled out, especially on 9th and 10th October. These showers, if at all, will become very light, fleeting, and patchy on 12th and 13th October. Rains are likely to cease completely from 14th October onwards, which is when the monsoon may exit from the city and surrounding areas. This marks a timely withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the cultural capital of the east.
