Low Pressure Area Forms Over Arabian Sea: Intensify To Depression Soon
May 22, 2025, 5:03 PM | Skymet Weather TeamAs on expected lines, a low-pressure area has formed over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the South Konkan and Goa coasts. It is likely to move northward and intensify to a depression in the next 24 hours. Further timelines for its movement, track, and intensity are a little uncertain at this point in time. However, the system will keep close proximity to the Konkan Coast over the next two days and trigger heavy rain and thundershowers all along.
The low-pressure invest area is centered around 17.2°N and 72.3°E. Environmental analysis reveals favorable conditions, with moderate easterly vertical wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures (29°–30°C).
Though there is broad agreement among various models, one odd model is less aggressive for its likely intensification to a tropical storm. More clarity is likely after the system becomes a depression. The potential for the system to develop into a cyclone in the next 48 hours is medium.
The core of the system is located very close to the ridge in the higher atmosphere. The wind field of the steering current between 30,000’ and 40,000’ is light and wavering. Therefore, there is a question mark at this time on its likely movement and further intensification. The proximity of the land is further hampering its growth and deepening. As such, these systems in the Arabian Sea around this time, at such locations, are rather ambiguous.
Most of these, after the initial struggle, find their way to the Northeast Arabian Sea, off the Saurashtra & Kutch Coast. An observation period of another 36 hours will be needed to bring clarity. However, the chances of the system developing into a cyclone can not be ruled out straightaway. Caution needs to be exercised, and the available time may be utilized for aligning and allocating resources in case of the eventuality of a storm.
