Heavy Rain Continues in Mumbai: Monsoon Chaos Triggers Flooding, Traffic Disruption Across City
The monsoon continues to tighten its grip over India's metro cities, with Mumbai bearing the brunt of widespread downpours and rising water levels.
Mumbai woke up today to an unrelenting spell of heavy rain that has thrown normal life out of gear. Streets across the city began flooding early in the morning, severely affecting road traffic, local trains, and air travel. In the western suburbs, areas like Andheri, Sion, Kurla, and Goregaon witnessed waterlogging, leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic and major commuting delays.
One of the worst-hit spots is the Andheri Subway, now completely submerged and shut down for vehicular movement. Local trains — the city’s lifeline — are running behind schedule, while several flights have also been delayed or diverted due to poor visibility and water accumulation near the runways.
Mumbai is likely to face a high tide of 4.44 meters at 1:22 PM today. If heavy rainfall continues through the afternoon, more low-lying areas could go under water. As a precautionary measure, access to Juhu Beach, Marine Drive, Bandra, and Madh Island has been restricted.
The BMC has deployed emergency teams with water pumps and issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar, expecting sustained heavy rainfall over the next four days.
Municipal teams are racing against time to drain out water and unblock drainage systems. Despite their efforts, visuals from the ground show flooded streets, stranded commuters, submerged vehicles, and neighbourhoods at risk — once again highlighting how vulnerable India's metro cities are to extreme monsoon events.
