Monsoon Withdrawal Starts From West Rajasthan, Early Exit Likely From North India

Southwest Monsoon has started withdrawing, to begin with, from Rajasthan. The process started yesterday, 14th Sep, and the line of withdrawal passes through Ganganagar, Nagaur, Jodhpur, and Barmer. Further withdrawal is likely from some parts of Kutch (Gujarat), Rajasthan, Punjab, and the mountain states of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The withdrawal has started earlier than normal and monsoon may vacate most parts of North India during the next one week or so.

Till 2019, the normal date of withdrawal from West Rajasthan was 01st Sep. This was based on 40 years of data from 1901–1940. The dates of onset and withdrawal of monsoon were revised in 2020. For onset, the dataset of 1961 to 2019 was used, and for withdrawal, the data from 1971 to 2019 was benchmarked. Under the revised schedule, the monsoon retreat from West Rajasthan was changed to 17th Sep. The dates of withdrawal were delayed by 2–4 days for Chandigarh and Delhi. The revised date for Delhi is 25th Sep, 4 days later than its earlier mark of 21st Sep.

Before the revision of dates, the earliest withdrawal of monsoon was on 04th Sep 2015. Post revision, the monsoon was normally withdrawing toward the fag end of September, with its earliest withdrawal on 20th Sep in 2022. In that year, the monsoon exited from Delhi on 29th Sep. The latest retreat of monsoon after the revision of dates was on 06th Oct in 2021. The withdrawal date of Mumbai was revised to 08th Oct from its earlier mark of 29th Sep. Similarly, Kolkata’s withdrawal date was extended by one week to 14th Oct. There is no change in the date of 15th Oct, when the monsoon retreat gets completed from the country.
