Pre-Monsoon Showers Over Mumbai: Spill Over To Next Week Also
May 15, 2025, 1:50 PM | Skymet Weather TeamMumbai witnessed early pre-monsoon activity this season. The city observed moderate showers last week, wherein Santacruz and Colaba recorded 39 mm and 61 mm of rainfall over a period of three days. Normal rainfall for the month of May is rather low at 11.3 mm. More showers are likely during this week and will roll over to the next week as well. The sultry conditions familiar to the city around this time will sit back and relax to provide an adequate comfort level.
There is a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea, off the Konkan Coast. A north-south trough also extends from the Saurashtra Coast to the east-central Arabian Sea. This combination is fueling warm and moist southerly winds along the coastline. The orography of the Western Ghats is pushing this stream further to trigger rain and thundershowers. The weather activity may not be severe and prolonged.
Mumbai gets intense weather when the westerly stream from the Arabian Sea meets head-on the coastline of the city. This pattern becomes more prominent on the arrival of the monsoon.
There is another cyclonic circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal in the lower levels. This feature will shift closer to the Tamil Nadu Coast tomorrow. Further, it may even move inland over the interiors of Peninsular India first and closer to Konkan and Goa a little later. In all probability, this circulation may roll across the coast and merge with the pre-existing weakened cyclonic circulation over the sea.
The first part of weather activity on account of the Arabian Sea system may last between 15th and 18th May 2025. This will include a few spells of thundershowers, mostly in the evening and night hours. After a small pause on the 19th of May, the other system intruding from the Bay of Bengal may take the weather activity further next week. Yet another spell of rain and thundershowers can be expected to resume with little more vigour anytime between the 20th and 23rd of May. There is a likelihood of a pre-monsoon vortex coming up over the central parts of the Arabian Sea around next weekend. The pre-monsoon activity may get prolonged and intense too for the coastal city of Mumbai and its suburbs.
