A thick layer of dust has enveloped most parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) today, causing widespread visibility issues and raising health concerns. This blanket of dust is the result of dust storms that developed over parts of Rajasthan, combined with strong south-westerly winds sweeping across the region.

These winds, originating from the arid Thar Desert in Rajasthan, are carrying large volumes of dust across northern India, reaching as far as Delhi and its neighbouring regions. These conditions are likely to persist for the next two to three days, offering little to no immediate relief for residents.

As a result of the dusty atmosphere, the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi and NCR has deteriorated significantly and remains in the "poor" category. Such conditions can exacerbate respiratory issues, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

There is a glimmer of hope, however. Light rain is expected in the region today, May 15th, and tomorrow, May 16th. While any precipitation is welcome under the current conditions, the extent of relief will depend on the intensity and coverage of the rainfall. If the rain is heavy and widespread, it could help in settling the dust particles and clearing the air. However, if the showers are light and scattered, their impact may be minimal.

People are advised to limit outdoor activities, use masks when stepping out, and stay updated with local weather and air quality reports. We will continue to monitor the situation and urge caution as the dusty conditions prevail.
