Delhi Records Highest Temperature Of May, Further Rise Likely

Despite favourable conditions, Delhi and its suburbs did not receive any rainfall yesterday. Yes, the day temperature rose further on the expected lines. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 40.4°C, about 0.2°C more than the previous day. This is also the highest temperature of this month so far. The day is expected to heat up further, and the maximum may breach the 41°C mark today.
A feeble cyclonic circulation continues to persist over North Punjab and the border areas of Pakistan in the lower levels. The other circulation over the foothills of West Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand has become less marked and weakened into a trough. The east-west trough joining the above two systems runs north of Delhi. The position still remains favourable and supports an outside chance of a mild dust storm with strong winds later in the day.

The day temperature is likely to rise further on three counts. The cloudless sky will allow the sunrays to become sharp. Surface and low-level winds are dry westerly, favoring transfer of heat from the west. Also, there is a layer of dust particles hanging in the lower layers of the atmosphere. This will trap the outgoing radiation from the Earth and, therefore, cause a marginal rise of temperature. All these factors put together will trigger the heat stress, and the day temperature may rise to 41°–42°C today.
Conditions remain supportive for a brief spell of thunderstorm-dust storm tomorrow as well. If so, the activity will happen during late afternoon and evening hours. The chances of any such activity become less on the weekend before they start favoring it, yet again, during the start of next week
