Rain-Thunderstorm Tonight For Delhi: Weekend May Be Dry
May 16, 2025, 1:37 PM | Skymet Weather TeamDelhi gave a miss to the pre-monsoon activity for the last two days. Except for poor AQI and slight heat, there was no other significant feature. The base station at Safdarjungrecorded a maximum temperature of 40.6°C, about one degree above normal and also the highest so far this month. The day temperature has been increasing for the last three days, but only by a whisker. However, the mercury is expected to spike today and may reach 42°–43°C. Earlier, the capital city had recorded a maximum of 42.1°C on 26th April 2025, the highest of this pre-monsoon season so far. Today, it may exceed this mark.
There is a cyclonic circulation over North Punjab and the adjoining Pakistan region. Other cyclonic circulation over the foothills of Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh persists. The trough joining the two circulations, albeit a weak feature, runs north of Delhi. This will keep the surface and low-level winds drier and stronger.
While the low humidity levels may raise the mercury, the strong winds may help reduce the spike. But overall, the temperature is likely to shoot up rapidly in the afternoon hours, breaching 40°C, a little early in the day.
Proximity of the trough, coupled with the excess heat, together will trigger convective clouds during late evening and night. The thunderclouds are likely to develop over the city and suburbs sometime late in the night. A peal of thunder, a flash of lightning, and gusts of strong winds kicking up dust are likely in the night. Rain and showers will follow this activity and may even spill over till early morning tomorrow.
While the temperature may rise today to log the highest of this month, it may drop marginally tomorrow and the day after. However, it may continue to breach 40°C on the weekend. As the day proceeds, the clouds gathered during the night will shatter, giving way to a fair amount of sunshine. Surface winds are likely to become strong, more so on Sunday. The next round of similar weather activity can be expected during the first half of next week.
